Medical staffH1N1 Update: Combined Flu
Vaccination Recommended for Fall

The spread of the H1N1 virus has slowed to a crawl, but public health officials are still categorizing it as a pandemic and they recommend vaccination again this fall as we head into the flu season.

Reports of H1N1 cases in the United States are low, but H1N1 continues to circulate and cause illness. At present H1N1 is most active in parts of Africa and some countries in the tropics. In the United States, there are sporadic cases being reported. The frequency in Minnesota has been low.

The seasonal flu vaccine being produced this year is a three-in-one. It will protect against H1N1, another influenza A strain and an influenza B virus. People will only need to get one shot this flu season, not the two that were recommended last year.

The new combined flu vaccine will be available in the fall and is recommended even if you were vaccinated or were sick with H1N1 last flu season.

If you have questions, please call your medical provider or visit the flu information pages of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the Minnesota Department of Health.

Lakeville Heart Restart!FamilyHealth Supports Heart Restart!

FamilyHealth Medical Clinic is a supporter of the "Heart Restart!" cardiac arrest survival initiative under way in Farmington and Lakeville, as well as many other communities. The focus of Heart Restart! is to promote a specific series of actions that can increase the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrest victims. These actions are: Call 9-1-1, start CPR and administer defibrillation.

Farmington Heart Restart! The Farmington and Lakeville Heart Restart! programs have goals of training 5,000+ and 14,000 residents, respectively, in the hands-only CPR method known as CPR Anytime or No Fear CPR. They also work to encourage all businesses to have automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in their facilities and to make the locations of the AEDs known.

This sudden cardiac arrest survival initiative is provided in association with Take Heart Minnesota.

There will be a CPR Anytime and AED training session at Farmington City Hall on July 14 from 4 to 5 p.m., and other sessions will be scheduled in the coming months. As noted in the top story above, No Fear CPR training will be offered at the Minnesota Night to Unite event hosted by FamilyHealth Medical Clinic–Lakeville on August 3 between 5 and 7 p.m. For more information about training and sponsorship opportunities in Farmington, call 651-400-0069 or visit www.farmingtonheartrestart.org. For Lakeville, visit the City of Lakeville's Heart Restart! web page or call 952-953-2650.

Radiation Facility in Northfield

Mayo Clinic is planning to build a radiation oncology facility in Northfield. The facility will be located on St. Olaf College property across North Avenue east of the Northfield Hospital campus.

Mayo Clinic logoThe $10 million project will be a complement to the medical oncology services already provided at Northfield Hospital.

Mayo Clinic says the radiation facility will provide a significant benefit to cancer patients in the area. It will allow patients, who are often quite ill, to receive radiation treatment locally, rather than having to drive or be driven up to an hour for treatment in Rochester or the Twin Cities.

Planners estimate that the new facility will serve 200 or more patients each year. They say Northfield is a preferred site because of the existing partnerships with Mayo Health System physicians in the area, an existing patient base and the convenient access to a quality hospital. Plans call for the facility to be open in the middle part of 2011.
